LENGTH CONVERTER

Select the length you want to convert and then write the amount you wish to convert into another unit of length into the "From" field, and click on the unit to which you wish to convert into the "To" field. The results will be shown in the "To" field right after you click on any unit.

Length , as you may know, refers to an accurate measurementof anything from end to end, and it isn't easy to be exact when the conversion of miles into kilometers. Sometimes, we require an estimation of others arrival or to make it to our destination this is the reason length converter can be really useful for calculations. Measurementconverter is utilized depending on the circumstances and, since you can convert any type of length, it will assist you with your mathematical difficulties as well. To determine how far an individual is, you can convert their distance in kilometersor miles and calculate the exact time of advent.

The world is built on measurements. The first length ever discovered was about four hundred years ago which was known as an ancient measurement of length. It was known as Cubit. Today, everything is constructed using measurements and distances of our steps is calculated also called the average speed of walking, which is 6 km/hour.

However, not all conversions are precise, as the word accuracy means the most exact measurement to a the standard or known value. If today people didn't know about length conversion, they wouldn't be aware of the average amount of time required by an engine to cover just a few kilometers. If measurements weren't a part of our lives, we never would have calculated the requirements to visit space. If there weren't measurement calculators, we could not have solved the mysteries of physics.

The majority of us use tools to measure different things in our lives. In some cases, if you want to add something to your home, but you aren't able translate the measurementsto the needed length measurement unit and come up with an estimationwhich is often wrong, these instruments allow us to assess the environment that surrounds us. They will tell us what height we are. Moreover, length measurements aren't the same across the globe, since the measurements of height are measured in inches, feet centimeters, meters, or MM to the CM in various countries. The use of an length conversion toolfor for this function is vital.

It is possible to measure lengths between objects and convert them into the desired length measurement, i.e. convert an inch into cm or convert feet to meters with the help of the length calculator. Our online length converter can help you save your time in manually turning the measurements to other length units. We all recognize that a kilometer can be only a fraction of mile, yet the time to start counting is when you must travel over a coupleof hundreds of miles to determine the length of time to the time when it comes to deciding a destination.

If you are looking to convert meters into feet or vice versa, you can use the procedure below to find the required length:

  1. On the Unit Converter page all you need to do is look at the length conversion calculatorin the navigation menu. Just tap it, and you'll find your length conversion calculatorright before you, as shown in the image below: mm to cm
  2. You can convert any unit of length to other units by entering the desired number into the "From" section and choosing which one is to the "TO" section.

Convert Lengthand Distance Units Instantly

The converter includes modern length units. There's also a converter for historical units of length. It is a good idea to explore for the ancient medieval, and other units that have no use anymore.

The American System (US Customary Units) and British Imperial Measures

American weights and measures are based on units employed in Britain prior to 1826, which was the date when the imperial system was officially established. From 1960 to 1963 American and British length measurements differed in two part per million. By the middle of the 20th century, the difference started to cause issues and the governments of both nations agreed to modify the measures to exactly match. Since then Great Britain and the United States used the exact length measurement. For the U.S. the old standard of foot was used, and it was referred to as the designation US survey foot.

Since 1995, the UK implemented metric units for general use. The only imperial measurements of length that are currently used in official use are feet, miles, yards and inches for road traffic signs.

British Imperial Measure before 1963

Initial English official measurement standards were introduced in the 15th century. British system of units, also known as imperial units was established in 1824. The British Weights and Meausurements Act of 1824 repealed all existing British measures legislation and redefined existing units. In 1963, the Weights and Measures Act standartized international measures.

International Nautical Measure

The term "international nautical mile" was defined by First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco in 1929. This is the sole definition that is widely used today, and is the one accepted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Before 1929 different countries had different definitions as did the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States did not immediately accept the value of international standards.

Meter definition

Meter (British English: metre) is the primary length measurement in many metric systems, including the International System of Units (SI).

The meter definition changed as technological methods for measuring progressed. Today, it's defined as how long the path taken by light in the fraction of 1,000,000,792,458 second.

But how was it characterized before?

  • The first trials of the definition of the meter started in 1790. At that time, The French National Assembly decided that the length of a new meter would be exactly what is the size of a pendulum that had a half-period of one second. You can check out the accuracy of this figure with our easy pendulum calculator. Simply type 2 into the pendulum's time box and you'll obtain the length of the pendulum. In fact, it's close to the one meters (0.993621 meters).

  • In 1973, the circumference of the Earth was chosen as a neutral reference point. The meters were defined as one-ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole1 meter equals 1/10,000,000 of the quarter meridional radius of the Earth, across the meridian of Earth through Paris
  • 1799-1889, brass, platinum, and the platinum alloy with 10% iridium meter bars were constructed, still as base materials with the length of Earth's meridian. In the 1st General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1889, defined the meter as the distance of two straight lines of a typical bar of the latter type of alloy. The International Prototype Meter is kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres close to Paris. This definition of meter was in force until 1960 and was also used in the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures.
  • From 1960 until 1983 the meter was redefined again as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red radiation of Krypton 86 under certain conditions.
  • 17th Conference established that the term "meter" refers to 1/299,792,458 of the distance light travels in a vacuum within a single second The measurement definition has been in place up to the present.

The table below summarizes the timeline of a meter's definition (by Cardarelli, 2003).
