The rank of deputy superintendent of police or Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) within the Commissionerate System [1] was created in 1876, when the policy of Indiaisation was introduced. It was at first only held by Indians and was equivalent to assistant superintendent (a position previously held only for Europeans). Deputy superintendents are currently state police officers who are part of the provincial police forces. They can be direct applicants to the position or elevated to the rank of inspector. Assistant commissioners of the police, who are members of the provincial forces, can be promoted to the Indian Police Service after limited years of service that vary between 8 and 15 years, based upon the specific state. [2] Deputy superintendents typically serve to the position of circle officers within districts. The states that have them are Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh, the rank is generally referred to as the circle officer (CO), although this is not correct as CO is a job that is not a position, but a grade. For the states of West Bengal, there is a DSP is the head of a sub-division and is usually known as a sub divisional police officer (SDPO).
The candidates must have Indian citizens with any degree and ages 21 and 38 years. There is a minimum physical requirement of height 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) for males and the height of 155 cm (5 1 inch)) for women. The requirements for chests of 84cm (33 in) and chest length by 5 centimeters (2 in). For Tamil Nadu, 165 cm (5 5' 5') is the first minimum measurement requirement. Every year, the state governments make a list of members of the state police who are suitable for promotion into the Indian police Service. Officers recruited by State Public Service Commissions get this rank directly. The highest rank is Superintendent of Police and the rank below that is Inspector.
